Girlfriends

They wore pink angora sweaters,

knee-length skirts,

and satin ribbons in their hair.

They went to football games,

beach parties and the senior prom.

They were girls then.

Th laughed and cried,

wrote in diaries,

told each other secrets.

They believed in fairy tales

and knights in shining armor.

That's what girlfriends did.

Now the set a table

with linens and white lace.

they use their good dishes

and bone china cups,

saved for such occasions.

Drinking white wine in crystal goblets,

they nibble on crackers and cheese,

talk about their children

and vacations by the seashore.

They plan shopping trips.

They celebrate their friendship

with birthday cakes and tea.

When old friends get together

they're girls again.
